This past August, Hurricane Harvey made landfall as a category 4 hurricane and caused catastrophic flooding in parts of southeast Texas, becoming one of the costliest natural disasters in the United States. A few weeks later hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico , also causing significant damage. In addition to the lives lost, many people lost their homes and all their possessions. Area animal shelters, already overwhelmed with homeless pets before Harvey and Maria , are now struggling to find room to house displaced pets while their owners begin to rebuild their lives.
Our staff wanted to help these affected pets and reached out to find where our services were needed. Dr. Rachel Plafker-Esrig volunteered at St. Hubert's Animal Shelter and examined over 100 cats before they left on their journies to various shelters and foster homes throughout the country.
Natalie, one of our veterinary technicians, along with Dr. Leary spearheaded an endeavor to transport 5 dogs displaced in Texas by Hurricane Harvey and provide housing, veterinary care and find them loving homes. We are happy to report that at this time 4 of the 5 dogs have found homes! Below are some pictures of the dogs and cats that our staff has helped. The Kearny Observer also wrote a nice article about our efforts. Click for story here.
